Feeling like a prisoner in a windowless office all day, dreaming of tropical weather, sunshine, beaches and open water? Enjoy ocean fishing or have you always wanted to try it? Consider taking a Costa Rica vacation this year because Costa Rica fishing is among the best in the world. There are many different species of fish to catch as Costa Rica is bordered by both the warm Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Of course, you can always just fish close to home. A trout weighing one whole pound can be fun to catch. Three minutes of fighting the little guy after two hours of sitting over the ice. Now, consider catching the little trout’s cousin (literally, its cousin), the great marlin, weighing in at hundreds of pounds and battling you for three-and-a-half hours!
A great place for a Costa Rica fishing vacation is its North Pacific coast. This area is called the “Gold Coast” because of its amenities and is easilyconveniently reached. There is a new international airport at Liberia, Costa Rica, just minutes from the North Pacific Coast and your adventure. You will find the fishing centers of Flamingo and Tamarindo with miles of great beaches and lots of Costa Rica attractions. If you are in search of sails, visit this coast between May and August for the best fishing, though these fish are here all year. From August to October, you might come into large schools of different tuna species with some weighing up to 400 pounds and many exceeding 60 pounds. Many anglers fish the shoreline-dwelling roosterfish here November to March not far from the Papagayo Resort. You also have a good chance of hooking large marlin, wahoo, and brightly colored dorado fish.
Billfish are a popular target for Costa Rica fishermen and ladies and the Central Pacific coast offers them in abundance. Fish the waters off Quepos or the Los Suenos Marina from December to April for large marlin or sailfish. Between May though October you can often catch a vibrant dorado while trolling offshore. Tuna, wahoo, snapper, roosters, and snook are also available along these shores and are found closer in. You will not be disappointed fishing here!
For many, Costa Rica fishing paradise is found along the southern Pacific Coast near the incomparable Osa Peninsula down to Panama. When when the water is warm, sails and marlin are abundant. Inshore, you will likely run into roosters, large snapper, wahoo, and amberjack. The Golfo Dulce is said by many to offer the finest inland fishing in Costa Rica. This is because it contains many small coves and is very rocky, giving fish a great place to hide. Hook a barracuda, grouper, or delicious sea bass here as well as other inland species. And, at times, you will have thousands of porpoises around your boat as they follow the bait fish.
Costa Rica’s Caribbean waters contain the world famous fishing areas of Barra del Colorado and Tortuguero. Although these waters are often very choppy, you can catch many types of deep sea fish on days when the water is flat. The prized tarpon gamefish are plentiful here from May to November and some reach about 150 pounds or more. They are caught close to shore and also in rivers and estuaries that are filled with wildlife. This remote coast is one of the only places where you might catch a rare Atlantic sail. Big snook are also readily available. You may even hook a giant grouper, guapote, tripletail, or Jack Crevalle! And, try to time your visit when the Atlantic green sea turtles are nesting on the world’s largest reserve.
Costa Rica fishing is justly world famous with its dozens of fishing world records. The bordering waters off two oceans offer a staggering amount of fish species. For a terrific adventure, Costa Rica charters can be found online and through travel agencies. Wherever you are you will find many outfitters if you decide to go on the spur-of-the-moment. So, get out of your cubicle, get away from your computer, and head to the tropical sun. See you here!
